Prebiotics are such natural food components that are left unaffected by the digestive enzymes in the upper section of the gastrointestinal tract and are transported to the large intestine unchanged, where they promote the production of beneficial bacteria – i.e. the probiotics. Prebiotics were discovered and denominated by Marcel Roberfroid in 1995. As components of functional food, like probiotics, they form a transition between foods and medicinal products.
